Retro Rewind: Final Fantasy X – Chocobo Blitzball Butterfly Racing?!

judyava Over the past year or so, several members of The Backloggery have been participating in a Final Fantasy Marathon started up by Noi. The main goal is to play as many numbered games in the series as the participants can (mostly being limited to what they have on hand) before Final Fantasy XIII is released. While not an official participant in the marathon, its very existence has encouraged me to play through a few of them on my own: I, II, III DS, IV DS, VI Advance, and most recently X.

Final Fantasy X has an odd distinction of possibly being one of the easiest in the series and also one of the hardest. It all depends on how you want to play it. If you’re just there for the story, then overall it’s pretty easy to just breeze on through. There are a few stumbling blocks, of course; namely certain boss fights that can be a bit gimmicky, but a little planning tends to make them not much of a problem. On the other hand, if you want to experience all that X has to offer, you will be beating your head against the wall and possibly breaking your controller many, many times. Retro Rewind: Super Mario 64 – Do what with his tail now?

judyava One of the things I have an overabundance of happens to be unfinished games. They kinda just pile up over the years and for the most part I didn’t really care whether I’d gotten around to beating them or not. The advent of The Backloggery has changed that somewhat. I’m still kinda lazy about it, but I at least try to get some knocked down. And one of the many games I have yet to trash thoroughly happens to be Super Mario 64. Seeing as how said game is what really sold the Nintendo 64 for me (well, at least before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time came out anyway), I figured it was about time I got around to changing its status. And then I decided that I should write a blog post about it once I’d managed to complete the game since I haven’t talked about anything in the past month or so. Such a naive assumption… I started up a new game of Super Mario 64 on the 15th of September. I have yet to finish it. It may take another month, it may even take longer than that. I was doing so well too, chugging right along, and then I ran straight into the roadblock known as Rainbow Ride. Actually, no, let me call it by its real name: Rainbow Hell. This is probably the level that made most players want to break their cartridges in half and forget that this game ever existed. But asides from that particular aspect, it’s still a good game in its own right, so I might as well write a post up about it anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

Dissidia: Final Fantasy – First Impressions

judyavaI suppose it says something that three quarters of us Press X to Win bloggers have and are playing this game; and I’m guessing the only reason Ginger doesn’t have it is because she doesn’t own a PSP (yet). Give it time, the siren call may yet bring forth her downfall. But anyway, Dissidia: Final Fantasy has finally arrived legally and in English upon the shores of the United States, and there was much rejoicing. Seriously, this is a game that a very substantial cadre of gamers have been waiting impatiently for. Is it worth the hype? So far I’d have to say yes. Granted, I’m not very good at fighting games. In fact, I suck royally at them, but this isn’t exactly what I’d refer to as a pure fighting game. Dissidia is an unholy conglomeration of fighting game, RPG, and board game with a dash of RTS shoved in there for good measure. What came out of that very unnatural blend is a game that molds itself well to the play-style of whatever sort of player you may be. Read the rest of this entry »

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia – Why so grindy, Konami?

judyavaMy copy of Ecclesia was purchased when it first came out in the US, but I didn’t get around to playing it until the start of August ‘09. Overall, it was an enjoyable play, though it did have a couple of drawbacks that prevents it from being one of my favorites.

There are a few things about Ecclesia that made it very appealing in my eyes. First off was the main character: Shanoa. It’s always nice to see a mature woman in a game, even more so to have her as the protagonist. Another thing was the change in art style. The previous two Castlevania DS games featured anime style artwork for their characters. While I don’t have anything against said art style, I really didn’t think it fit the darker atmosphere and settings of the series. Thankfully, Ecclesia sports a more gothic style of artwork and it really does lend itself well to the game. Read the rest of this entry »
